What is the vertical alignment extents layer?
The extents layer gives every floor of a building the same reference frame. Each drawing carries a common extents boundary, so when floors are stacked in the platform, risers, elevator cores, columns and exterior walls land in the same position on every level.
The problem it prevents
Floor plans drawn at different times often use different origins. Stack them and the elevator core drifts a metre per level, riser diagrams become meaningless, and any question that spans floors, such as where a duct actually runs, cannot be answered from the plans.
How it works
- A dedicated extents layer defines the shared building envelope reference on each floor drawing.
- On import, each floor is registered to that extents boundary rather than to its own drawing origin.
- Alignment is verified visually by stacking floors and checking core and column continuity.
- Later revisions inherit the same reference, so alignment survives future updates.
